Directions to Our Practice
If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take:
- Take Pacific Ave north for two miles, then turn left onto 140th St. Turn right at the next intersection onto C St, and then we’re in the second building on the right, at 320 138th St S.
- If Pacific Ave is too busy, you could instead head east on 168th St, then turn left onto B St. Turn left again onto Military Rd, then right onto C St. After the intersection with 140th St, turn right into our parking lot.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
The Spanaway area has a fascinating history that dates back long before modern development. The name “Spanaway” originates from the Lushootseed word “spadue,” meaning “dug roots”—a reference to the area where Native Americans harvested camas and other edible roots. The Hudson’s Bay Company, which controlled the region until 1863, documented the area on their maps as “Spanueh Station” and “Spanueh Lake,” where their subsidiary raised cattle, grain, and sheep along the lake’s shores.
The first European settler to claim land near the lake, Henry de la Bushalier, briefly attempted to rename it after himself, but this effort faded with his death just one year later. In 1890, the area was reimagined as “Lake Park,” a planned community developed by the Lake Park Land, Railway and Improvement Company. The company purchased extensive land east of the lake and constructed a rail line to create a “recreation mecca” on the shores of Spanaway Lake.
When Mount Rainier National Park was established in 1899, Spanaway became the original gateway to the mountain. Tourists would take the train to its terminus in Lake Park, then embark on a two-day stagecoach journey to Mount Rainier, with an overnight stop in Eatonville. Although the U.S. Board on Geographic Names officially recognized “Lake Park” in 1897, common usage prevailed, and the name was officially changed back to Spanaway in 1970. Today, Spanaway remains a vibrant community with deep roots in Pacific Northwest history, maintaining its connection to both natural beauty and pioneer heritage.
